In Search of Your Massage Therapist
I don’t know about you, but I am very particular about what I want from a massage. I’ve often gone far too long in pain and discomfort without getting a massage, because I didn’t know which massage therapist would meet my specific therapeutic needs. The disappointing treatments I’ve had in the past have left me hesitant at times to try someone new, despite also having had some absolutely brilliant treatments!
But look, not getting a massage is not going to help you feel better, is it? You can find the right massage therapist for you without too much hassle if you go about it with some strategy. Here’s what I recommend:
Ask around. Ask the people in your life if they can personally recommend a massage therapist, especially those people who have similar lifestyles and body goals. Are you a runner? Ask other runners and athletes for a recommendation. Do you work at a desk all day and have chronic pain in the back, shoulders, and neck as a result? Ask others who are in the same boat. Are you an expectant mum? Ask other mums about pregnancy massage. If someone gives you the name of a massage therapist who is wonderful, get in touch. You’re more than likely on the verge of a great massage.
If no one has a recommendation for you, do a Google search with your city, town, or area, and whatever terms are relevant to the reasons you need massage therapy, ie Dublin pregnancy massage; or, plantar fasciitis massage therapist Templeogue, etc.
Look through the websites of the massage therapists in your area. Read the About section. Read the descriptions of treatments. Read testimonials. You’ll start to get a sense of what a practice or therapist is like. Listen to your gut.
Once you find a therapist or practice that feels like the right fit, get in touch. A phone call is often best. Have a conversation about what you are looking for. Ask questions, voice any concerns you have. Hate phone calls? Send an email, and include the specifics of your situation.
If you get the sense that the massage therapist knows exactly how to help you, make that booking! Because at this point, you will have narrowed it down to exactly the kind of therapist that can help you feel better.
Communicate. Before, during, and after your massage treatment, communicate anything that is pertinent to getting the most out of your treatment. Is the room too cold? Is the pressure too much? Not enough? Did the therapist spend enough time on a particular area? The best massages are the ones where there is an easy flow of feedback and response between client and therapist. Don’t hesitate to speak up. Massage therapists want your feedback! They really, really do!
If you are happy with your experience, rebook. If not, have a chat with the therapist about what could be further tailored to suit you better. Or, if you wish, try a treatment with another therapist. With how many talented and highly qualified therapists there are these days, it won’t take you long to find one that’s just right for you.
So come on now, go forth and find a massage therapist you love, because life is not meant to be lived in pain!
